Indonesia guide › Plan your trip to Indonesia
Do you need travel insurance for Indonesia?
Yes: insurance covering medical costs and evacuation is essential for Indonesia, even though it isn't required to enter. The country is huge, the good hospitals are concentrated in the big cities, and an evacuation from a remote island to Jakarta, Bali or Singapore can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Your home system won't help: Medicare doesn't cover you overseas, and neither does the NHS.
Why it matters even more here:
- Private hospitals, the only ones offering Western-standard care, often ask for a payment guarantee before treating you.
- Distances: from Flores, Maluku or Papua, a serious accident means an air ambulance.
- Activities: diving, volcano hikes, surfing, scooters, boats… exactly what policies love to exclude.
Before you buy, check these points in the policy:
- Medical costs and evacuation: high limits (ideally unlimited or several million dollars for medical), with direct billing where possible.
- Credit card insurance: often requires the trip to be paid with the card, and usually has lower limits, more exclusions and a maximum trip length.
- Scooters: without a valid motorcycle licence at home (and an International Driving Permit), an accident is generally not covered.
- Diving: maximum depth covered, decompression chamber, required certification level.
- Altitude and volcanoes: some high-altitude treks (Rinjani, Carstensz) are excluded or capped.
- Cancellation and delays: useful in a country where an eruption can close an airport for days.
If something happens: call your insurer's emergency assistance line first; they'll direct you to a partner hospital and often pay directly. Keep their number and your policy number on your phone AND on paper.
Verdict: a travel policy covering medical costs and evacuation is the essential for most travellers; comprehensive cover (cancellation, luggage) makes sense for an expensive trip or one booked far in advance; divers and trekkers should read the exclusions line by line.
Tip: read the exclusions before the price: a cheap policy that excludes scooters or diving won't cover you for exactly what you're going to do in Indonesia.
