Where should I stay in Bali?
Bali is an island you move around a lot, and the area you choose changes everything. These are the five most popular bases:
- Ubud (jungle and culture): in the heart of the island, surrounded by rice fields, temples and waterfalls. It is the best base for sightseeing. The centre is congested and it is one of the wettest areas.
- Seminyak (chic): beach clubs, restaurants and boutiques. Ideal for couples or a first trip, with nightlife that is calmer than Kuta's.
- Canggu (surf and remote work): laid-back, with trendy cafes and rice-field views. Perfect for a longer stay or learning to surf.
- Uluwatu (cliffs): clifftop temples, surf breaks, sunsets and romantic villas. Wilder and drier, but less developed: there is little shopping and having your own transport helps.
- Kuta (near the airport): cheap rooms, but chaotic and very touristy. Often not recommended unless budget is your only priority.
Prices in Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu are now close to Western levels. The best deals are still on the outskirts of Ubud, in Sanur, in Amed and on the north coast.
Tip: for a week, the classic split is 3-4 nights in Ubud, then 3-4 nights on the south-west coast, in Seminyak or Canggu. That way you don't cross the island every day. With kids, Sanur, Nusa Dua and Seminyak are safe bets.
