How much does a trip to Bali cost?
Bali is no longer the bargain it used to be, but it is still good value, especially away from the tourist south. Here are the main costs, excluding flights (US$1 is roughly IDR 16,000; check the current rate):
- Flights: the biggest variable. Prices depend on where you start and when: July-August and December-January are peak season.
- Accommodation: US$10-15 for a hostel dorm, US$20-40 for a guesthouse, US$50-120 for a hotel with a pool, US$100-280 for a private villa.
- Food: US$2-5 at a warung (a small local restaurant) or market, US$5-10 at a simple restaurant.
- Getting around: US$3-7 a day for a scooter (fuel extra), US$32-50 a day for a car with a driver.
- Sightseeing: budget about US$10-15 a day for tickets and activities.
In total, plan on roughly US$35-60 a day on a backpacker budget, and US$80-140 a day to travel comfortably. Don't forget the visa and Bali levy: about IDR 650,000 (around US$40) per person.
Tip: be careful in the south. In Canggu and Seminyak a trendy brunch can cost US$6-12, and places aimed at tourists charge three to five times more than local spots. Eat where the locals eat and your budget will thank you.
