When is the best time to visit Bali?

The safe bet is May to October: the dry season, with 27-32°C (81-90°F), little rain and lower humidity. The best months are May-June and September-October: good weather without the crowds of July-August, the busiest period (Northern Hemisphere summer holidays and Australian winter school holidays).

What about the rainy season, from November to March? You can go. Downpours mostly come in the late afternoon or at night, and even at the height of the monsoon you spend about 70% of your time in the dry. Prices drop and the rice fields are an electric green. The months to avoid if you want sun: January and February, the wettest, and December, when the holidays push prices up despite the rain.

The climate also changes with location. The south (the Bukit peninsula) is the driest; Ubud and the north are wetter; and at altitude (Kintamani) nights drop to 15-18°C (59-64°F) in January. The sea stays at 27-29°C (81-84°F) all year. Surfers prefer the dry season for the south-west breaks (Uluwatu, Bingin).

Tip: if your dates fall in the rainy season, pack a light rain jacket and do your sightseeing in the morning: showers tend to arrive late in the day.
